The Chalet Club in Lake Lure, North
Carolina is not your average getaway. The Chalet and the seven
surrounding cottages provide guests with secluded serenity for
relaxation and rejuvenation.
Built in 1927 as a family retreat, three
generations of the Washburn family have since had the
privilege of carefully developing the warm hospitality enjoyed
by members since the club's opening to the public in 1934.
There are five guestrooms in The Chalet on
the second floor, each with private bath. Also on the second
floor is the main living room, open for all Chalet guests to
enjoy its large stone fireplace, library, large screen TV, and
selection of games and jigsaw puzzles.
Seven cottages are also available, each
with its own unique history. The Honeymoon cottage was
built in 1927 as a caretaker's cabin; it is a favorite of
those who appreciate rustic charm. With a living area,
fireplace, bathroom, bedroom, and porch, it's as though you
have your own little home in a resort setting. Built for Dr.
Washburn's mother in 1943, the East Cottage houses two
bedrooms, two baths, a living room, and a private porch. Rock
fireplaces in every bedroom give this accommodation a lovely
mountain warmth. The West Cottage is a two-story
cottage built in 1934 for Dr. and Mrs. Washburn and shares
many of the same architectural details of the East Cottage.
The top floor has one bedroom, one bath, a living room, and a
covered porch. Downstairs, there are two more bedrooms, one
bath, and another covered porch. All three bedrooms and the
living room have fireplaces.
Farview, built in 1946, was
purchased by the Chalet in 1953. This three-bedroom,
three-bath house offers picture windows with panoramic views
in every room. Farview has an open, airy feeling with
pine and walnut paneling complementing the mountain scenery.
The east wing can be used as a separate suite. Stonehenge
I and II were both purchased by the Chalet in 1978. Stonehenge
I, built in 1950, has two bedrooms and two baths upstairs
and a third bedroom and bath downstairs. Stonehenge II,
built in 1962, features a beautifully crafted pine cathedral
ceiling and a large fireplace in the living room. There is one
bath between the two bedrooms and a covered porch. A swimming
pool lies between the two Stonehenge cottages, making the
complex a favorite for reunions. Hilltop has two
bedrooms, each with a bath. Light pine paneling and large
windows overlooking the gorge create Hilltop's spacious feel.
An open deck with views extends off the living room.
A hearty breakfast is served from 8:00 to
9:00 a.m. in the main dining room. For those who sleep past
the breakfast hour, coffee, juice, and sweet rolls are
available after nine; these can be ordered as well and taken
to your room the night before. The Chalet Club also offers
all-inclusive rates that include lunch and dinner. Make sure
during your day's activities include The Chalet's satisfying
lunch at 1:00, which can even be prepared as a picnic upon
request. Dinner is served promptly at 6:30 following happy
hour, serving as a great way to wind down the day.
The Chalet offers almost every type of
recreation to fill your stay with activity, sun, and fun!

Water sport season begins April 1 and
introduces several ways to spend your spring and summer days.
The Chalet maintains a fleet of two canoes, two electric
boats, sea kayaks, and a fully equipped bass boat, all of
which are available for guests to enjoy on their own. Boat
rides on the Chalet's Supra ski boats and twenty-person
pontoon boat are organized on a daily basis. Experienced
drivers/instructors and equipment are on hand for water skiers
of all ability levels. Bass, trout, catfish, brim, and crappie
populate Lake Lure, and the local rivers are stocked with
trout. Two pools are accessible to Chalet guests for a quick
dip or lap swimming, and a private beach and dock on Lake Lure
are maintained for Chalet guests who enjoy lake swimming.
Canoes, kayaks, a fishing boat, and two Duffy electric boats
are also available to Chalet guests.
For those who don't wish to partake in the
water sports, the recreation and fitness center, with
low-impact exercise equipment, billiard room, changing room,
entertainment room, and nap room for children, is located near
the boathouses. Seven miles of spectacular wooded trails that
originate at The Chalet and lead to spectacular overlooks and
waterfalls provide wonderful opportunities for hiking and
biking. Tennis, horseshoe, and shuffleboard courts are also on
the premises and ready for any competitor. Golf, horseback
riding, and whitewater rafting/tubing are available in the
area for someone looking for activity off the resort. The
problem for guests at The Chalet is never what to do, but
finding the time to do it all! |
