- Minimum Stay: Although one night
reservations are accepted, we recommend a minimum stay of 2
nights. A longer stay affords you more opportunity to embrace
the beauty and serenity of Orca Island and its surroundings. It
should be noted that many guests who have reserved only one
night on Orca Island have, upon seeing the island, its
surroundings and their accommodations, expressed regret that
they did not reserve additional nights.
- Cancellation Policy: Cancellations
made 60 days or more prior to reserved date(s) will receive a
full refund less $50.00 processing fee per cabin rental.
Cancellations made 30 days or more (but less than 60 days) prior
to reserved date(s) will receive a refund less one night's
rental per cabin. Cancellations made within 30 days of reserved
date(s) are non-refundable. Our cancellation policy is based on
our operational limitations here in Alaska - reservations are
often made well in advance, a very short (90 days) summer
tourism season, and extreme difficulty in obtaining substitute
reservations on short notice. Recognizing that our guests may
encounter unanticipated circumstances that may necessitate a
change in their travel plans, sometimes requiring them to cancel
their reservations, we suggest that vacation cancellation
insurance be purchased.
- Restrictions: No pets. No smoking
inside cabins.
- Children: Orca Island Cabins
welcomes and encourages younger guests to experience and enjoy
the unique wilderness setting we have to offer. However, due to
safety issues primarily involving the rugged and steep coastline
of Orca Island, slippery rocks, the elevated cabin decks and
their proximity to the shoreline, and the cold ocean waters
surrounding the island, only children 7 and older are permitted.
It has been our experience, during our initial years of
operation, that younger children found it difficult to navigate
the island safely and the resulting frustration and stress on
both the children and parents, who simply could not oversee
their younger children throughout their stay, detracted from
their overall experience. In addition, the peace and tranquility
generally enjoyed by our adult guests on the island can, and has
been, undermined in those situations. For these reasons,
children must be 7 years of age or older to overnight on the
island. In addition, parents are requested to encourage, in
children visiting the island, a demeanor consistent with the
peaceful and tranquil nature of the island surroundings which is
very special and much appreciated by everyone.
- Recreation and Activities: Situated
in a protected cove, guests can enjoy kayaking, birdwatching,
tidepool watching, fishing, exploring or just relaxing as
wildlife comes into view both by land and sea. Observe black
bears and mountain goats on the mountainside; bald eagles
overhead; and Orcas (killer whales), humpback whales, Dall's
porpoise, Harbor porpoise, Steller sea lions and sea otters,
both in Humpy Cove and Resurrection Bay.
- Kayaking: A highlight for many
visiting Orca Island is a kayak paddle to a stream in Humpy Cove
where thousands of pink (humpy) salmon spawn each summer. A
short hike along the stream takes you to a spectacular waterfall
that cascades into an elevated pond. Humpy Cove is a popular
kayaking venue due to its protected waters, scenic coastline and
abundant wildlife. Single and double kayaks are available for
use at Orca Island.
- Evening Scenic / Wildlife Cruise: Orca
Island Cabins offers a 2 hour evening cruise to the bird rookery
at Cape Resurrection and Barwell Island. See a sea lion
haul-out, puffins, bald eagles, mountain goats, glaciers, rugged
coastline, the outer waters of the Gulf of Alaska and we always
look for whales - gray, killer (Orca), and humpback. Cost:
$60.00 per person (minimum 4 guests).
- Rent an Island: Exclusive use of
Orca Island is an option to any couple or group. Just specify
the dates and reserve all four rental units. Ideal for family
reunions, weddings, and special occasions.
- Fishing Charters: Arrangements are
available with fishing charters (for salmon or halibut) who will
pick up and drop off our guests at Orca Island.
- Water-Taxi: Orca Island Cabins
provides its own water-taxi service for its overnight guests.
The nine mile cruise from the Seward Small Boat Harbor to Orca
Island is itself a scenic / wildlife cruise with many photo
opportunities. Guests are welcome to access Orca Island via
their own vessel.
