Apples, a Kids Fair, and art share top billing at the 25th annual Apple Butter Festival in historic Berkeley Springs, West Virginia on Saturday and Sunday, October 10 and 11.
The weekend festivities begin on Saturday morning with a nostalgic hometown parade. All weekend long, festival-goers sip fresh pressed apple cider and lend a hand to stir thick, spicy apple butter bubbling in kettles in the square. Shoppers select handcrafted treasures and homegrown bounty from more than 250 vendors with wares spread throughout the park and along historic town streets. There are items for every budget, ranging from one-of-a-kind gold jewelry and art prints to apple trinkets and dried flowers.
Both days, mountain music pours free from the vintage bandstand in tiny Berkeley Springs State Park, heart of festival activities. Local favorites on stage include the old-time tunes of the Critton Hollow String Band and hot jazz licks from the Shenandoah Dixieland Band. On Sunday, New Liberty fills the park with their "newgrass" variation on traditional bluegrass sounds. Then the New World Theater Company delights Sunday audiences with their unique brand of street circus and fire eating.
A Uniquely West Virginia section highlights popular Mountain State wineries and edibles. All ages of people are drawn to the many games and contests, including an egg toss contest and turtle race for the kids. The Ice House Art Center hosts a juried art exhibit, a local performers stage, and special entertainment for the kids. Saturday's world-famous beard contest features scores of entrants and hundreds of oglers.
For those who need a break from festival fun, there are ancient mountains decorated with colorful fall foliage, as well as the soothing relief of famous mineral baths and spas.
