Back to Introduction

Granbury's reputation as an historical outpost on the Brazos River has with time spawned a culture geared towards entertainment.

It is most appropriate then that the Granbury Opera House takes front and center stage amongst the town's entertainment venues. Built in 1886, the opera house exhales a rich history that architects resuscitated in 1975 when they restored the building to its original grandeur. That same year, the building reopened its doors to live professional theater; and more than a quarter century later, the opera house features musicals, plays and melodrama year-round.

For tickets, call (817) 573-9191.

Live theater also steals the spotlight at the Texas Amphitheater in nearby Glen Rose. For five months beginning in June, the star-lit theater presents "The Promise," the inspiring musical drama chronicling the life of Jesus Christ. A state-of-the-art light and sound system, a tri-level stage, and incredible acoustics combine with the natural beauty of a Texas valley to provide spectators an extraordinary sensory experience.

Tickets 1-800-687-2661.

Granbury also offers two excellent venues for watching theatrics via the big screen. The Brazos Old-Fashioned Drive-In and Cinema, an authentic relic from the 1950s, invites movie-watchers to get cozy while watching the latest Hollywood flicks from the comfort of their car. And the Driftwood Theatre 6 lures Generation X'ers with its six Texas-sized screens, stadium seating, ultra-comfortable lounge-like rocker chairs, and an arcade that offers the latest in cybermania.

Tarleton State University Dora Lee Langdon Cultural Center Art Exhibits and musical events throughout the year. Exhibits at historic Gordon House, 308 E. Pearl St., open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and weekends from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. unless otherwise noted. Call (817) 279-1164.

The Shanley House Center for the Arts Historic limestone mill building and home of the Lake Granbury art Association features year-round art exhibits. Call 817-579-7656.

Located on the square, Granbury Live features professional variety music reviews and headliner shows for the entire family. As its name suggests, the Third Thursday Gospel Concerts feature old-time gospel music. Most of the Third Thursday Concerts are held in the Granbury Opera House, but some take place in the summer at other designated locations.

Granbury Live nostalgia concerts on the historic square Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Call 817-573-0303 for a schedule and ticket information

The Texas Amphitheater, the Tarleton State University Langdon Cultural Center and The Expo Center feature a more eclectic mix of music. The amphitheater brings in headline rock shows, the cultural center hosts art exhibits and musical events year-round, and a climate-controlled Expo Center features a wide variety of concerts in addition to serving as a venue for championship rodeo and main-event wrestling.

The area's most diverse entertainment venue, though, is The Gulch at Granbury. This family-fun park includes an arcade, batting cages, sand volleyball, bumper cars, picnic areas with barbecue pits, and a three-acre miniature golf course, renowned as the world's largest.
