The Katy House Bed and Breakfast is located
in the beautiful old railroad town of Smithville, Texas. Named
for the old "Katy" railroad line (the Missouri,
Kansas, and Texas Railroad) this small hotel lodging built
into the area on its way to Houston and the Port of Galveston,
is a sentimental favorite of the people of Smithville.
The Katy's Italianate exterior is graced by
an arched portico set over the bay-windowed living room.
Elegant Georgian columns reflect the home's early 1900's
origin. Long-leaf pine floors, pocket doors, Battenburg lace,
and a graceful staircase accent the handsome interior. Many
good hill country memories live here.
This charming turn-of-the-century Texas
bed and breakfast is handsomely decorated in American antiques
and railroad memorabilia and has been lovingly restored to its
original beauty, while keeping the guests' comfort and
convenience in mind. Choose from five unique guest
accommodations, each with a queen-sized bed, private bath with
clawfoot tub, and cable television with VCR. You might also
have the additional amenities of a electric Franklin
fireplace, in-room refrigerator, private deck with rocking
chairs, or additional sofa-sleeper to accommodate family or
extra guests. One lodging accommodation has a kitchen for
convenient meals.
Opening soon, a new guest cottage
is being renovated from an authentic 1910 caboose.
Wake up to the smell of freshly baked
bread. A delicious, full country breakfast is served in the
main dining room every morning. Plan your day touring historic
Smithville and the surrounding area as you have a second
helping of jalapeno cheese grits. After breakfast, rock your
stress away on the Katy House front porch before you set out.
Play golf in the nearby towns of Bastrop
and LaGrange, or take on the challenging Pine Forest Golf
Club. Enjoy a leisurely bicycle ride (bring yours or take one
from the Inn) along the Colorado River and through the city's
shaded streets. Your complimentary map of Smithville provides
easy directions for a walking or biking tour, complete with
historical information about the town and Bastrop County. Lake
Bastrop, Bastrop State Park, and Buescher State Park are only
minutes away and offer several additional recreational
activities such as boating, swimming, and picnicking. |
A city of beautiful old neighborhoods with
tree-lined streets, the Smithville area offers everything from
recreation to relaxation, to shopping and sightseeing. Along
Main Street, many old businesses, office buildings, and homes
have been restored to their original appearance. You'll enjoy
exploring the antique and craft shops in both Smithville and
other nearby towns. Local restaurants provide Mexican and
Texas country-style dining. You can also see the house and
other sites where the movie Hope Floats was filmed.
The quiet, country town is a 45-minute
drive from Austin and about a two-hour drive from either San
Antonio or Houston. Located off Highway 71, one of the
prettiest springtime drives in the Texas foothill country,
Smithville is accessible by car or small plane. The Hill
Country Flyer, Austin's scenic excursion steam train, departs
from Cedar Park, only 75 minutes by car from Smithville.
