About:
Artist Natalia Margulis
Saint
Petersburg University, Russia
Born in Russia
and graduated from Saint Petersburg University, Natalia has
worked in the U.S.A. as a full time artist since 1993.
Participating in the most prestigious art and craft shows, she
has gained recognition and won numerous top awards in
contests.
Her passion
for fiber has helped her to find the needle as a versatile
instrument to capture and create the impression of nature.
Once a design is developed Natalia attempts to connect the
modern and traditional elements of hand and machine embroidery
to create unique, intricately stitched cloth. With the machine
needle serving as a pencil, Natalia draws with the threads on
a plain, painted background. The background, which can also be
made up of many stitches incorporating strips of hand dyed
fabric, threads, ribbons, is what gives the surface a
particular rich textural and saturated colored effect. The
surface of the work becomes truly three-dimensional with knots
ridges, bumps, and holes, and finally decorated with hand
stitches. Different kinds of overstitched threads like shiny
and smooth rayon, fluffy wool and matt cotton capture the
light and reflect it with constantly changeable shades, which
adds a glossy iridescent appearance and animated depth to the
design.
