About:
Artist Jason Lucas
I paint to
escape. I paint to escape all of the control, anger and
negativity that society can demand of a person. Through my
painting I let go and feel mentally cleansed. I forget about
what mediums are allowed to work together or what color
pallets might appeal to others. If I mishandle a step in the
process and damage a piece then it was meant to be and becomes
a part of the creative process. Nothing can be viewed as a
mistake when I create. I allow the process and the material to
have as much control as myself. I am simply a tool in the
process.
My work is
created through a multitude of layers and simple processes. I
begin by applying a mixture of synthetic and lime based
plasters to a raw and unstretched canvas that is then left to
cure. The canvas and mud are then stretched and fractured
creating a random field of cracks, voids and textures. I then
begin to develop the main body of color for the piece through
water based stains, glazes and inks. Then I build any
additional color fields or images with stains and acrylic
paints. After a piece is completed I then mount it to a board
and box frame it to prevent further fracturing. ... Lucas Fine
