Nestled in the heart of the picturesque White Mountains,
the Cabernet Inn has been kindling the flames of romance for
more than 150 years.
This historic inn's sentimental journey took a couple of
turns before it finally arrived home. Built in 1842, the inn
originally sat on North Conway's Route 16 but on the opposite
side from where it now sits. The building was relocated in
1896 by placing it on skids, harnessing the skids to a huge
team of oxen, and literally dragging it across the street.
Once moved, the inn underwent a face-lift and was enlarged to
create a 14-room cottage. The Noel family purchased the
cottage at the end of World War II and intermittently used it
as an annex to their Clarendon Hotel.
In 1999 the inn went through some rather dramatic
renovations to both the interior and exterior. And while the
building has changed, the ambience remains the same.
Surrounded by towering pines and award-winning perennial
gardens, this intimate inn offers the perfect setting for
those seeking a romantic rendezvous or simply a well-deserved
break from the concrete jungle.
The inn accommodates guests with 11 individually decorated
rooms, each with a queen-sized bed, private bath and air
conditioning. Some of the rooms have fireplaces, and some have
Jacuzzis for two. There are two rooms, though, that feature
both, creating the ideal mood for a special occasion.
Mornings at the Cabernet Inn start with a hearty country
breakfast that includes farm-fresh eggs, blueberry pancakes,
and sizzling bacon or sausage. Guests can opt to take
breakfast in the inn's cozy dining room or al fresco on the
sun deck. Later in the day, baked cookies and tea are set by
the fireplace in the inn's "gathering room," a
finely appointed meeting place that includes cable television
and a generous supply of books and games. |
This romantic country inn is nestled among towering pines
just a stroll away from one of the most breathtaking views of
Mount Washington in the valley.
Mount Washington beckons with all its beautifully groomed
ski trails (Alpine and cross country) and challenging nature
trails customized for bikers and hikers alike. There's also a
championship golf course close by as well as some gorgeous
rivers and lakes for those who enjoy water sports ranging from
canoeing to fishing to kayaking.
Visitors to North Conway are always impressed by its
eclectic collection of shops and restaurants. Several tourist
attractions in the area include the Mount Washington Auto
Road, the Cog Railway, the Conway Scenic Rail, and the Great
Glen Trails. Nearby ski areas include Cranmore, Attitash,
Black, Wildcat, and Bretton Woods. |
