The hundreds of lakes, ponds, and rivers in the Lakes Region are teeming with a great variety of cold and warm water fish, making the area popular with anglers. The fishing season begins in April when the "ice out" occurs. Early catches include salmon, rainbow and lake trout, and white perch. Both smallmouth and largemouth bass, pickerel, perch, and sunfish appear later into the summer. The season continues until the late months of autumn, then resumes again when "hard water" takes place.

Countless species of fish, including lake trout, salmon, smallmouth bass, and others, fill the waters of Lakes Winnipesaukee, Winnisquam, Squam, Merrymeeting, and Ossipee. Rainbow trout flourish in Winnisquam, Newfound, Silver, and Waukewan. Chocorua is known to contain brown trout. And white perch and striped bass can be found in Lake Wentworth.

Anglers are encouraged to scout out the region's many fine sports shops and marinas, which can assist with licensing and equipment. It may also be wise to get in touch with a professional guide, who knows these local waters and can make the time you spend fishing more rewarding.
