Did
you know that Fred Astaire, Marlon Brando, William Jennings
Bryan, Johnny Carson, Willa Cather, James Colburn, Dick
Cavett, Sandy Dennis, Crazy Horse, Henry Fonda, Gerald Ford,
Harold Lloyd, Nick Nolte, Standing Bear, Roger Williams and
Darryl F. Zanuck are just a few of the people who once
called Nebraska home. Although Nebraska is an Indian word
meaning "broad, flat water," early white explorers
once described this area as the Great American Desert.
Little did they realize Nebraska would become the
breadbasket for the nation and much of the world. Nebraska
is fortunate to have fertile land and an abundant supply of
underground water known as the Ogallala Aquifer. Today about
23 million acres is cultivated cropland and 20 million acres
is range and pasture land. Approximately 1,700,000 residents
call Nebraska home. Come see the Agate Fossil Beds, Agate, a
World famous location of fossils of Miocene period mammals,
including bear-dogs. One of three national monuments in the
state. Travel the Oregon Trail to Chimney rock and Morrill
Hall, Lincoln -- Home of Archie, the world's largest fossil
elephant, found near Wellfleet, Neb.; also home of the
world's biggest collection of elephant skeletons and other
outstanding collections. |
