The Squire Tarbox Inn Bed and Breakfast, listed on the
National Register of Historic Places, is a quiet, Mid-Coast
Maine country Inn surrounded by fields, stone walls, and
woods.
A peaceful saltwater marsh with rowboat and dock beckons
beyond the pasture, while pristine barns are filled with
gentle, refined animals. The Inn is located away from tourist
crowds but convenient to coastal adventures.
The Squire Tarbox Inn combines the best of 18th- and
19th-century character. The original house was constructed in
1763, and the original boards and timbers remain today. Samuel
Tarbox was an enterprising businessman who had a thriving
fishing and shipping business in the early 1800's. It is
believed that he received the honorary title "Squire"
because of his wealth, land holdings, and influence on the
community. Samuel died March 19, 1861 and is buried with his
family in the wrought-iron fenced enclosure just north of the
parking area.
The Inn offers 11 guestrooms, each with a private bath.
Handmade quilts and antiques adorn each of the lodgings,
exemplifying the charm of antiquity and the comforts of today
and providing an atmosphere of warmth and a personal tie to
New England's rich traditions. The Main House rooms, where the
Squire lived, are more formal with high ceilings, decorative
moldings, and wood-burning fireplaces. The Barn Rooms in the
attached 1820's barn are more casual, with exposed beams and a
cozy, country feel.
A full, buffet-style breakfast is served each morning in
the 1763 dining room. Breakfast includes freshly baked
croissants, homemade bread, yogurt, fresh fruits, cereals,
freshly brewed coffees, a varieties of teas, and finally a
choice of hot meals freshly prepared by the chef. Linger over
a cocktail each evening while watching the birds at the
feeders on the screened-in deck off the dining room. After
cocktails, enjoy the mouth-watering meals prepared by the
owner/chef. |
At The Squire Tarbox Inn, you can be as busy as you wish or
simply do nothing and let the Inn restore you. A walking path,
rowboat, birding, and mountain bikes are available on
premises. Boat trips, whale watching, shops, deep sea fishing,
and ocean sciences are in nearby Boothbay Harbor. In Bath, you
can visit the Maine Maritime Museum and antique shops. In
Georgetown, visit the Reid State Park Beach (miles of crashing
Atlantic ocean) and then have lobster on the dock at Five
Islands. Take a trip to Pemaquid and see the Pemaquid Point
Lighthouse, the Fisherman's Museum and Art Gallery, Pemaquid
Beach, or Fort William Henry.
The Squire Tarbox Inn Bed and Breakfast offers a wonderful
journey into countryside simplicity. |
