Midcoast Maine
History and Festivals
Midcoast Maine possesses a wonderful history. The peninsula
of Phippsburg has twelve villages centered around fishing and
lobstering, boat building, and ice-gathering. A small museum
recounts these local industries with photos and artifacts.
There are also many cemeteries with ancient tombstones. |

Nearby, the little shore village of Popham boasts two forts:
one from the Civil War era at the edge of the Kennebec River,
and one from World War I, consisting of submarine-viewing
bunkers up on a hill. Also in Popham is the site of Fort St.
George, briefly settled in 1607. This summer (2007), there
will be a four-day celebration of the 400th anniversary of the
building of Maine's (and the nation's) first ship, The
Virginia: August 23, 24, 25, and 26. (Then everyone headed
south to Florida for the winter -- our own little snowbird
joke.)
In July, you can attend Bath's Fourth of July Heritage Days
and the Brunswick Naval Air Station's Air Show. Later
in August, there are the Highland Games and a Blue Grass
Festival. All summer long, the Maine State Music Theatre
offers Broadway-quality entertainment. Bowdoin College hosts a
summer-long world-class music festival, and Bates College
hosts a dance festival in late July. The Theatre at Monmouth
features classic, modern and Shakespeare plays. The Boothbay
Opera House hosts all kinds of musical events |
