traveler.

This wonderful restored Cape farmhouse, circa 1800, is
filled with the smell of flowers and country cooking. The New
England Bed and Breakfast Inn is situated on a quiet peninsula
rich in history, unspoiled natural beauty, expansive beaches
and Down East tranquility.
EdgeWater Farm offers six charming guest rooms, all with
private baths. Two of these lodging accommodations are suites
that can sleep up to a total of five people in two adjoining
rooms. One of these suites is on the ground floor for easy
access. The Sun Room dining area has a unique stone fireplace,
cathedral ceiling, skylights and beautiful garden views. This
is a wonderful room for myriad events: rehearsal dinners,
reunions, small conferences, dinner parties or just hanging
out.
Outside, wander through four overflowing acres of organic
gardens and lawns. Flowers bloom April through October! The
Emersons now farm an additional Soup Kitchen Garden for the
city of Bath. Bill created a woodland labyrinth in a nearby
glen of beech trees near a swale with three woodland pools.
Watch a snowstorm while up to your neck in 87-degree water
in the 12 x 38-foot indoor pool, or steam away in the outdoor
seasonal hot tub, May through October, with five of your best
friends. Another gathering spot is the spacious, light-filled
Rec Room, where guests can enjoy classic board games, play
miniature ping-pong/pool or "fooz ball," dance, or
curl up with a good book.
Rise to a glorious Maine morning perhaps go for an early
walk or swim before joining others for a leisurely full
breakfast featuring the farm's own fresh fruit and vegetables
as well as local eggs and Carol's delicious blueberry cinnamon
pancakes. Scrumptious, nutritious and delicious! Then head to
nearby Popham Beach State Park to bask on four miles of
expansive white sand beaches. Due to shallow water, the water
temperature is actually quite comfortable from late June
through August. Bring a picnic lunch and stay to enjoy tidal
pools at Fox Island, or surf fish for stripers. But watch your
food, as the seagulls can spot a potato chip bag a mile away!
We've seen tug o' wars.
Explore tidal river estuaries for the nesting sites of the
Piping Plover and Least Tern, two endangered species protected
here. Secluded Sea Wall Beach is a two-mile hike through
balsam forests and tidal marshes where eagles (which have come
back in recent years), egret, heron and kingfishers feed.
Spectacular views of the beaches and Mt. Washington (75 miles
away!) are a thrill!
There's a lot to do around here, or nothing to do. Sports
enthusiasts will find pond and sea kayaking, inexpensive golf,
tennis, bicycling, sailing, windsurfing, charter and surf
fishing, and freshwater swimming. Restaurants offer everything
from bistro dining to beachside "lobster shacks",
all featuring water views and Maine's incomparable super fresh
Lobster. |
The nearby Bath/Brunswick area has a wide variety of
restaurants, shops of all kinds and a variety of
entertainment. Summer brings all sorts of festivals as well as
Equity cast Broadway musicals at the Maine State Music
Theatre. There are also classical music concerts and good
old-fashioned band concerts in the parks. Theater and music
play continuously at the Theatre Project, Theatre at Monmouth
and the Boothbay Opera House. Local museums offer maritime
lore, forts, Civil War memorabilia and Arctic artifacts. There
are historic house, garden and cemetery tours along with
lighthouse cruises, railroads, whale watches, nature and
lobster cruises. Of course, antiquing and artists' studios are
everywhere.
If you're looking for miles of lovely white sand beaches,
serene ambiance and friendly service, EdgeWater Farm Bed and
Breakfast is the answer. Be sure to give the Emersons plenty
of notice if you're planning a summer vacation, because
Midcoast Maine's cool summer breezes and peaceful environment
make it very popular. Whole house rentals are available as
well for weekend, five or seven days stays starting on Fridays
or Sundays. |
