How to Get Here

Nestled along the sparkling Kennebec River, this small jewel of a city is an old seafaring town. The recorded maritime history began only twelve miles down the Kennebec. Four hundred years ago, the first ship built by settlers of the New World was launched. Shipyards once lined the river's edge, and Bath-built vessels sailed the seas of the world. Bath has sailed into the present, bringing a taste of her history with her.

Bath is ideally sited for water access at the head of two peninsulas. At the mouth of the Kennebec, historic Fort Popham stands guard. Nearby, Popham Beach and Reid State Park in Georgetown offer miles of sandy beach and rocky cliffs.

At the nationally acclaimed Maine Maritime Museum, learn about boat building, lobstering, and fishing. You may have a chance to walk the decks of a tall ship for a glimpse of the sea-faring life. Then get an up-close look at the continuing tradition of Bath-built ships. Take a boat trip on the river from the museum past Bath Iron Works facility, where naval vessels are still built today. Plan to enjoy a meal and shopping in beautiful downtown.

Bath's tree-lined avenues are graced by humble and grand examples of classic American architecture. The Nineteenth-century brick buildings and narrow streets have the charm of childhood revisited...a slower pace, a friendlier time.
