Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
In large bowl, stir together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Cut butter into 1/2-inch cubes and put over flour mixture. Blend butter into mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. In a small bowl, stir together buttermilk, egg, and vanilla. Add the two mixtures together and stir to combine; add currants or raisins if desired.
With lightly floured hands, pat the dough into a circle 8 inches in diameter on an ungreased baking sheet. Cut into wedges. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes or until top is lightly brown. Cool for 5 minutes on cookie sheet, then transfer to wire rack to further cool.
