New Orleans Pain Perdu

Our guests love this custardy breakfast treat with its melted caramel topping, perfect served with sausage links!

Ingredients
1-1/2 Tablespoons corn syrup
3/4 cup brown sugar
4 Tablespoons butter
Slices white bread (about 1 loaf), crusts left on
4 eggs
1 cup milk
3/4 teaspoon vanilla
Pinch of nutmeg

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine corn syrup, brown sugar, and butter in a saucepan and cook until butter is melted and the mixture is bubbly. Pour the mixture into a 9 x 9-inch glass or ceramic baking pan. Arrange bread slices in the pan in three layers. Cut slices to fill each layer.

In a large bowl, combine eggs, milk, vanilla, and nutmeg. Pour the mixture over the bread. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

Bake uncovered for 45 minutes. Lift the edges of the bread with a spatula and invert onto a serving plate. Cut into 6 servings and serve with a dollop of sour cream and a strawberry and kiwi fruit garnish.
