The River Valley Region of Connecticut extends from the beaches of Long Island Sound to the border of Massachusetts and straddles the historic Connecticut River. The region is accessed easily by interstate highways 95, 91 and 84. Here you will discover centuries of history and culture from colonial homesteads, to Mark Twain’s eccentric home, and Hartford’s fine museums and theater arts and performances. The small New England town of Essex is a fine old river town where you can find an inviting Bed and Breakfast Inn, ride an old steam train or cruise up the river. Favorite places to see include Gillette Castle, Dinosaur State Park, the Old Newgate Prison and the New England Air Museum. This river area is a fly-fishing haven and in the winter you will find great downhill and cross-country skiing. When you're in this area be sure to visit the Connecticut River Museum in Essex or the Connecticut Trolly Museum in East Windsor. Historic bluffs with love the Farm Implement Museum, Museum of Fife and Drum, and the Fire Museum just to name of few.
